    KAPLAN'S CORNER

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year!  I am so happy to be back again this year serving as Lafayette’s Assistant Principal.  I am continuing in my shared-site role this year (half-time at Lafayette and half-time at Gatewood Elementary) and truly love getting to know and support two communities in West Seattle!  For those who haven’t met me, I’m a local West Seattleite (with two elementary school aged boys of my own!) and this is my second year serving as Assistant Principal at Lafayette (and Gatewood).  Prior to that, I was an Assistant Principal in Renton for two years and, before that, I was an Assistant Principal and teacher for many years in San Diego, California.  I look forward to serving the Lafayette community and invite you to introduce yourself so we can get to know each other as we partner together to support all children’s growth.  I am also bilingual (Spanish/English) and happy to support families in communications.

Soy bilingüe y disponible para ayudar con las comunicaciones en español.

As always, keep reading, reading, reading with your kiddos and enjoy the start to a great school year!

    Laura Kaplan
    Assistant Prinicipal

    Health room

Hello! My name is Alison Angell, and I am the school nurse at Lafayette Elementary. I am at Lafayette on Mondays, Tuesdays, and every other Wednesday. Please stop by, call, or email me if you have any health concerns for your child. Health Office: 206-252-9507; Email: ahangell@seattleschools.org

    Medication at School

An Authorization to Administer Medications at School form must be completed each year for medication your student will/may need at school and school camps. This includes all prescription and over-the-counter medications and remedies (Ibuprofen, Tylenol, anti-itch cream, etc.).  An authorization form is also required for students to self-carry and self-administer any medications at school. This form can be found at the school office or Seattle Public Schools website at: https://www.seattleschools.org/departments/health_services/forms/

    Immunizations

Being fully immunized is important to keep all our students and staff safe and healthy. Some immunizations are required for continued attendance at school. Students may be excluded if their immunizations are not up to date.

Seattle Public Schools uses the Washington state Immunization Information System (WAIIS) to track a student’s compliance.  You may register with WAIIS to have access to your child’s immunization information at: https://www.doh.wa.gov/ForPublicHealthandHealthcareProviders/HealthcareProfessionsandFacilities/DataReportingandRetrieval/ImmunizationInformationSystem/ForParents

Hello Lafayette Families!  Welcome back to school! 😊 I am excited to be back this year as your .5 counselor.  Similar to last year, I will be spending a lot of my time teaching social emotional learning through Second Step in all the classes.  I will visit each class once every other week. I will be sending home a pamphlet in the next few weeks that will tell you a little more about me, what I do and how to best get a hold of me.

If you have any questions, or if I can support your child or family in any way, please reach out!    I am at Lafayette on Mondays, Tuesdays and every other Wednesday.   Here are the Wednesdays that I will be at school for the next few months:  9/18, 10/2, 10/16, 10/30.

Hello Wonderful Lafayette Community.  My name is Shawn Cudney and I am your new Physical Education Specialist.  I am starting my fifth year of teaching in Seattle Public Schools after receiving my MA in Education and my Health and Fitness Endorsement in 2014.  Though I am a fairly new certified teacher, I have been coaching and mentoring ever since I graduated High school from Northern CA in 2000.

Physical Education at Lafayette is going to be safe, fun, and inclusive.  Guided by state and national standards, my program promotes positive play in the gym, at recess, and at home.  Three core areas of learning in PE are psycho motor skills (moving and playing), cognitive skills (health and fitness concepts), and social-emotional learning (fairness, inclusivity, problem solving).  Each lesson will have opportunities to learn and reflect on those three core concepts of an effective Physical Education program.

In our first 3-4 weeks of school, we will be learning our routines, expectations, and schedule.  We will explore different moving patterns such as running, hopping, skipping, and jumping safely in the gym space.  We will practice tipping or volleying a ball up in the air to partners and teams.  We will have practice and discussions on being safe and inclusive during recess games such as four square, kick ball, and tag.  We will have discussions about safety and inclusion and reflect on your experiences together.

I’m excited for the opportunity to teach at Lafayette.  I hope you get the chance to visit us in the gym and see the moving and learning that is taking place.  I will be interested in having parent and student volunteers help with some of our activities so come in and meet me some time!

               Music

    Hello Lafayette Families!

Welcome back for our 2019-20 school year!

I am Mr. Payne, the K-5 Music Specialist here at Lafayette. I am very excited for this year because I now get to teach music for all grade levels. I am also here at Lafayette full time, so that means I can do even more and provide our students with a more rich and detailed music instruction.

This year I am planning on continuing to dive into the theory behind music, getting into more detail about how music works and discussing the function and practice behind rhythmic and melodic patterns. As we learn these tools, I will be teaching the students how to connect them to proper techniques while playing and performing a variety of musical instruments. This all stems from four goals I have set when it comes to learning music. The students will be able to create, perform, respond, and connect to new music material and understand how to build strong musical techniques.

This s going to be an amazing year!

If you have any questions for me, please ask.

    My email is sapayne@seattleschools.org
